S/S 2014 - Bags

Handbags you need to have this season:

- Backpack
The patterned backpack continues to be important for the juniors' market and appeared on the runways in abundance. All-over patterned backpacks emerge in canvas and nylon materials with checks, logos and abstract designs are key, tying in nicely with the sports mood for the season. The drawstring rucksack, tote pack, unstructured rucksack and front-pouch backpack all appeared as important commercial shapes.

- Duffle bag
This typically youth market item became luxurious and grown-up for the new season, with the duffle bag emerging as the go-to silhouette for everyday wear. Suede, woven raffia, crocodile and soft leathers were favoured fabrics, used all over or teamed with printed canvas to create a casual bag. Drawstrings were decorated with tassels, tightly pulled in and tied in a bow or knot to secure the fastening. Short handles brought a more formal approach to the bag while across-the-body straps created a casual look.

- Purses
Zip-around or clasp purses were the newest silhouette to join the clutch family as the catwalks were awash with the everyday coin purse being carried as an eveningwear bag option. There was a purse to fit every key trend as bold brights of orange and lemon looked sporty and came studded, while leather fringing at Valentino linked perfectly to the Nature Girl trend, and all-over beading or pastel embroidery offered the perfect finish to a Modern Romance look.

- Hard-case clutch
The trend for heavy embellishment continues with the hard-case clutch as oversized gemstones, clusters of beads and metallic studs decorated the small evening bag. This occasionwear favourite looks newest in soft pastel and neutral tones - tying in with the feminine and romantic mood for the season - while trims of gold and silver keep the look luxurious

- Sports holdall
As the mood for sports-inspired looks continue for another season, the sports holdall evolves with luxe leathers and graphic styles looking newest. Faux-nude leathers bring a soft, very feminine look to this traditionally masculine bag in unstructured and easy-to-carry silhouettes, while graphic printed or textured geographic grids are ideal for the youth market customer.

- Oversized clutch
The clutch bag shows no signs of slowing down for the summer season as oversized shapes update this bag shape. Exaggerated rectangular clutches were worn folded and scrunched under the arm in a casual manner. Straps and graphic stripes generated an active-sport look, while python skins and all-over crystals brought a decorated and luxurious finish to this versatile bag.

- Small cross-body bag
The mini cross-body bag for autumn/winter 2013/14 continues for another season as designers invest in practicality. There were a number of different guises for this bag on the runways with boxy hard-cases, miniature duffles, envelopes and even phone cases making up the bag silhouettes, all of which come on a long chain or adjustable leather strap.

- Tailored clutch
Formal styles saw elements from the portfolio, envelope and structured document cases merged together. Clutches were kept minimalist in block colours of white, pastels or summer brights with simple metal clasp fastenings or magnetic foldover panels, while python skins and metallic leathers offered a more opulent take on this smart clutch.

- Soft squashed clutch
The squashed clutch seen last season gains momentum for next summer as designers continue to offer an alternative to the classic structured or formal leather clutch bags in soft, slouched silhouettes. Leather bags came rolled or squashed with pastel hues at Burberry and Philosophy, with 3D floral embellishments making this the perfect accompaniment for the Modern Romance trend.

- Metal framed handbag
Continuing the mood for all things feminine, metal frames were added to structured totes, coming in natural-coloured reptile skins and polished leathers with cubed or rounded-metal clasp fastenings. Perforated leathers at Marni introduced a sports mood to this formal construction while Meadham Kirchoff combined embroidered motifs onto the bag, showing how it could be translated for the youth market customer.

- Shopper
The traditional shopper remains a key item within womenswear as bags were updated in large, rectangular silhouettes, moving away from last season's structured shapes and looking relaxed in super-soft leathers. Shoppers were minimalist, coming in block colours of blush, navy or black, while Valentino introduced a bold flash of lipstick red. Short handles kept bags elegant, while slightly longer strap options allowed designs to be worn over the shoulder.

- Ladylike tote
The formal tote bag shows no signs of slowing down for spring/summer 2014 in structured silhouettes, but with a more elegant twist than seen in previous seasons. New bold colourways on Krishna orange and baby blue breathe new life into this traditionally neutral-coloured bag, adding vibrancy and a sense fun. Fabrics remain luxurious in croc leathers, python skin and metallic leather.

- Luxe backpack
Backpacks also emerged for the more sophisticated customer in luxe polished and textured leathers and python skins. Dufflebag fastenings and satchel styling were favoured as a more structured shape was offered, with this formal bag contrasting against the youth and junior canvas and nylon options. Detailing was kept to a minimum, but perforated leather at Tory Burch and beading at Manish Arora injected a playful mood – these detail directions could be used to update backpacks for your customer next summer.

- Bowling bag
The rounded bowling bag silhouette returns in small-scale versions with a focus on surface decoration.

- Shoulder bag
Extra-long straps, saddle bag constructions and fringe trim emphasize the louche appeal of the shoudler bag this season.
